[Symphony] Dramatic performance drop since 5.1.10

We could try to provide a single parameter for backwards compatibility
after major upgrades like this. It's a nice idea, but may or may not
be easy to do, depending on the change. In all of this, the big issue
is time. No one wants to spend it on documentation, but we try our
best :).
