Dr. Ralphs and members of the mailing list,
You will be pleased to know that your file made its way to me and passed
the antivirus tests successfully on both of my computers. I will now tell
you
the results of my tests.
Your Symphony -built with g++ 3.3.3 - gave me a command prompt when
running from the shell, but crashed with an error message when running from
inside Gdb . The "backtrace" command yielded the same uninformative
output. That is the same behavior as my build of Symphony, so we both
know the different compiler versions are not at fault.
Next, I followed your previous suggestion and built a simple dummy
program
for testing gdb . My program - called "beer.cc" - does nothing fancy, it
just
prints the lyrics of the "Bottles of Beer on the Wall" song, followed by
the
computation of 5 factorial. To my surprise, it ran correctly from the shell
but
crashed inside Gdb. Even "backtrace" had a similar output. I guess my
version
of Gdb is broken.
In conclusion, you were right Dr. Ralphs, Gdb on my machine is at fault.
I don't know what is the specific problem, but at least I have a better idea
where to direct my efforts. I'm afraid the remainder of the problem falls
outside the scope of the Symphony mailing list but if you or anyone else is
still willing to help, I will be grateful.
Good night, and thank you all.
