Stuart,

	No experiments to back up this statement, but some experience.  I'd
point the finger at `make install'.  If you installed debug builds and then
overlaid non-debug builds without completely wiping away both the build
directories and the install directories, there's a good possibility some library
was not properly rebuilt. At the least, you want to run `make uninstall' and 
`make clean'.
