Matplotlib is another free/open source option. Like octave, it provides
a 'familiar syntax' to users of a certain commercial software package,
but in this case is based on the Python language.
An example of the sort of output you can get from Matplotlib is shown at
http://ascendwiki.cheme.cmu.edu/PygtkScreenshots#Viewing_an_incidence_matrix
