Is it possible to make the change so that it breaks code loudly?
If you renamed a constant, code using the old name would not compile.
Going to the documentation to find the new name should reward
the programmer with knowledge of the new semantics.

What about chatter?
The code could by default issue
messages warning of the new semantics.
Supressing the messages, either with a run-time
flag or with a compile-time flag would indicate
that one had at least noticed the messages.
