I too prefer the current setup.
It is very helpful to concurrently have different optimization and
debugging levels, along with different compilers.
For example, on AIX one can use the xlC or gcc compiler.
One can hope for the day where we will be able to use gnu make with the
Microsoft or gcc compiler on Windows.
