I think we should at least go with 2. Lou had a problem with 3.3.1. I
had a problem with 3.4.5. Here is a link to a bug report for 3.3.5.

It seems that the problem is real and a genuine bug in some of the
compilers. Today I upgraded to 3.4.6 and the problem went away.
