Hi,

We've been researching use of COIN-OR OS as an integration layer between our software and MIP/LP solvers.  Our applications are domain specific and we are in the process of modeling a couple different optimization problems.  Currently, we've been writing our formulations in AMPL.  Its good during our research phase because we can quickly come up with test cases and adjust the formulation accordingly.  AMPL won't work for us when we move out of research phase and integrate our formulations into our application code.  However, we like the idea of keeping our formulations in an algebraic modeling language.  This would allow our software to be more adaptable to new requirements or subtleties exposed when our software is installed at customer sites.

The COIN-OR OS folks (Dr. Kipp Martin) suggested that we look at CMPL.  The language is very full featured in terms of our formulations.  Our models can be written in CMPL.  Also, the transformation of CMPL to OSiL would allow our formulations to remain in a modeling language when we integrate them into our application code.  We would definitely like use CMPL.

The one blocking issue is the software license.  CMPL is licensed as GPL.  Unfortunately, this license is incompatible with our business.  COIN-OR OS is licensed as CPL and others with the Eclipse Public License.  Is there a particular reason to GPL was chosen?

Thanks for your assistance!

joseph
