Esben,
The normal case for nonbasic free (NBFR) variables is as Matt describes.
Try the GAMS test problem lp03 (http://www.gams.com/testlib/libhtml/lp03.htm)
for an example. It's a pathological problem consisting of a standard supply and
demand matrix (five constraints) embellished with a completely independent
equality comprised of 20 free variables. Any solution must have NBFR variables;
there aren't enough constraints to make them all basic.
