 If it is easy to modify the behavior of {{{make all}}} in the top level to
 do a {{{make install}}} (with DESTDIR) in all subprojects, then keeping
 {{{SUBDIRS = $(subdirs)}}} sounds preferable to me, i.e., better modify
 standard behavior on one place than reimplement everything.

 Do I understand your comment on not having to copy files from DESTDIR to
 $prefix correct in the way that you imagine make install in the top level
 to be just calling make install of each project without DESTDIR set?
 Sounds good to me.

 I think what you propose in Edit 1 is similar to what I meant in
 comment:25 (before the ''Or it would be just...''). I would prefer the
 DESTDIR to be a subdirectory of the toplevel build directory, not to be
 that one itself, just to keep things better separated.
